Cookies- The Basics
This “Basics Section” covers non-technical users’ most common questions and concerns about cookies. If you're confused about cookies and want some background, click here
What you need to know
How do I manage Cookies to make me safe?
Many non-technical users want to know the most simple way to get started managing cookies so they can have more privacy.
Here’s what we recommend: Change settings to remove cookies when you close your browser. Here's how to set the PrivacySuite to do that for you automatically
How does removing cookies protect privacy?
By removing cookies after you close your browser, you can help prevent sites from creating a history of you and your visits.
Should I ever allow a site to keep cookies?
Many sites require the use of cookies for the “Remember Me” feature which lets you login automatically. If you have sites that just seem to “log you in like magic” without re-entering your password each time, they’re using cookies. If you want to allow those sites to continue to “remember you”, choose the cookie setting “Will not be removed”.
Tip: Read about the PrivacySuite “Login and Password” App, which is as convenient as the "remember me" feature, but preserves your privacy.
How to change your default cookie settings once, for all sites
Open the Privacy Suite and go the TAB called “Opt out and Block”

In the section on the right called “Cookies”, check the box at the bottom called “Delete cookies when I close my browser”. This tells the PrivacySuite to remove all cookies upon closing your browser.
How to manage cookies on a specific site?
To manage settings for a specific site you must be on that site first. For example, to manage cookies on cnn.com, first open your browser and go to cnn.com.
To keep or remove cookies at a specific site, (such as cnn.com) a window may pop up in the bottom right hand corner of your browser (we call this the Privacy Alert Window illustrated below)
You can access this window again by mousing over the icon in the lower right corner.
Another way to change your settings is to open the PrivacySuite menu and go to the Privacy Info Tab
Click on the Abine icon in the upper right and select “Site’s Privacy Info”
What else can I do with Cookies?
We’ve already covered how to remove cookies upon closing your browser but you can also block cookies, accept cookies, and delete cookies.
Blocking Cookies prevents a website from putting any cookies on your computer.Deleting Cookies deletes them from your computer, but does not prevent a site from putting them on your computer again.
Accepting Cookies lets a site put any cookie on your computer.
To access these advanced settings use the instructions below.
Exploring Advanced Cookie Settings
If you’d like to go deeper, PrivacySuite’s advanced cookie settings will let you do so.Here’s how to get to advanced cookie settings.

Don't forget, some sites need cookies: Blocking may cause problems because some sites require cookies to be accepted in order to work. Sites where you login almost always require cookies!
